The Palace of Knossos near Heraklion
Heraklion, Crete · 180 experiences reviewed

Crete begins at Knossos.

The palace at Knossos, a day at sea off Dia, quad tracks into the mountains and the long road west to Elafonisi. What each is really like, what it costs, and where to book it.

The shortlist

Seven that carry a Crete trip.

First visit or fifth, these do the heavy lifting: the sail out to Dia, the palace at Knossos, the aquarium the kids refuse to leave, the quad day nobody expects to love.

Out on the water

The best day is the one at sea.

Dia sits an hour off the harbour, and its coves only open from the water. Board after breakfast, swim somewhere no road reaches, eat on deck, then sail back into Heraklion as the light turns. This is the day people build the trip around.

After the sun drops

The evening belongs to the villages.

When the day-trippers head back to their hotels, Crete gets going: raki poured at a long table, the lyra tuning up, a sunset sail out of the harbour. You can stumble on it yourself, or go once with someone who knows which table to join.

Off the coast road

The island turns to dirt tracks.

Behind the resorts the tarmac runs out and the good part starts: mountain villages, empty coves, a taverna lunch you earn. Take the wheel of a quad or ride shotgun in a 4x4.

Straight from the source

Raki, wine and oil pressed that morning.

The hill villages of Archanes and Peza have poured wine since the Minoans, and the raki still comes from the yard. Taste through a working winery, an olive mill, or a Cretan home kitchen.

Four thousand years on

The Minoans still set the itinerary.

Europe’s first city grew up around the palace at Knossos, and the frescoes, the giant storage jars and the labyrinth myth are still the reason most people come. See the palace, then let the Archaeological Museum join the dots.

Where to go

Pick your Crete, region by region.
